On the morning of July 4th, the SWUFE-UD Institute of Data Science at SWUFE held a meeting to discuss the work process of the undergraduate mentorship over the 2021-2022 academic year. The Joint Program’s directors of various disciplines and 25 of the undergraduate mentors attended this meeting. The meeting was moderated by Yang Shilei, dean of the institute.

Dean Yang reflected upon the overall development of the institute during the 2021-2022 academic year, extended his sincere welcome to 27 new mentors, and expressed his appreciation to all the mentors for their excellent guidance and supervision for the undergraduates. He emphasized that the SWUFE-UD Institute of Data Science would consistently centralize the undergraduate training, concentrate on the internationalization of data science programs, and implement the policy of developing the institute under the Party’s leadership into an institution with advanced education models beneficial for the local and global entities of the Joint Program. With that unique aim in mind, Dean Yang asked the participants to discuss the overall supervision impact and feedback from the undergraduate mentors.

During the meeting, the undergraduate mentors conducted effective communication on the student’s attendance and interaction, academic performance, graduate application plan, personal traits, and graduation thesis preparation. Prof. Liao Yi, Joint Program director of  Logistics Management, mentioned the necessity to enhance the student’s self-awareness of GPA and graduate application plan from the freshman year. Prof. Ma Jingtang, Joint Program director of Financial Mathematics, pointed out that we should prompt students to prepare their graduation thesis in advance, focus on the TOEFL and IELTS tests preparation, and broaden their international horizons. Based on the suggestions provided by the undergraduate mentors in this meeting, Dean Yang emphasized that the SWUFE-UD Institute of Data Science should further optimize the education mechanism to realize a rigorous and flexible education model. Meanwhile, he hoped that the undergraduate mentors could offer detailed supervision and guidance during the semesters to help their students build solid academic foundations and strong practical skills.
